Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What does the Koi represent?
A: The Japanese associate the Koi with perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose. Many of the clients we serve have obstacles, which have prevented them from succeeding in specific life domains. Because of the client’s strength and determination to overcome obstacles, it represents the courage and ability to attain high goals.
  • Q: What does The Koi Academy do?
A: We create individualized cognitive training plans for clients seeking to develop and remediate attention, concentration, memory, eye-hand coordination, basic numeric concepts, problem solving-reasoning skills, self-esteem and self-control.
  • Q: What is Cognitive Training?
A: Cognitive Training is exercise for the brain. It improves an individual’s mental abilities in a wide variety of areas. We use Captain’s Log, “a computerized mental gym,” to increase cognitive abilities.
  • Q:  How much time should be devoted to training?
A: As is the case with going to the gym and working out or with learning to play a musical instrument, improvements through mental exercise are gradual and take time. Clinical experience has shown that a minimum of two hours per week is needed to make progress with this training system. More training time is better, and the training can be done intensely up to two hours per day. If you wish, training can be broken up into two or three 15-minute segments per day. Very brief training, such as one half hour a week will in all likelihood do nothing to enhance a person’s cognitive skills.
  • Q: How much training time should there be before I can expect to see some results?
A: Any generalization of results or benefits is not expected until at least twenty hours of training have been completed. The rate of improvement is different for each individual. The focus is to keep moving up the levels. Formal evaluations should be done after 20, 40, 60 and 80 hours of cognitive training to assess improvements and re-evaluate training goals.
  • Q: What is Captain’s Log?
A: Captain's Log® is the most widely used, comprehensive set of computerized cognitive training programs ever published. Koi Academy coordinators are certified to create cognitive training plans using Captain’s Log. Click here for more information

  • Q: Is Cognitive Training limited to a specific population?
A: Cognitive Training is useful for all populations. Cognitive treatment helps to reduce impulsive, hyperactive, and off-task behaviors for all individuals.
  • Q: How do I choose the right Koi Product?
A: The Koi Academy recommends that a Comprehensive Assessment be completed before a Koi product is selected. The Assessment includes analysis of the client’s academic & cognitive abilities, as well as their behavioral patterns. It is primarily used in conjunction with the services provided by the Academy.  However, as an individual product, it can be utilized in a number of capacities, including individual service plans, biopsychosocials, or general informational purposes.  Using the Assessment, we are better able to tailor services and identify the most appropriate Koi product to meet the needs of the individual client, and also open the lines of communication between the client, caregivers, school and service providers.
